Artists Comments regarding the work-

This work is my somewhat straw grasping attempt to depict an image that speaks to the metaphysical mysteries surrounding the questions of the existence of life and consciousness. The inexplicable nature of each of these philosophical ideas, I think, lends itself to an enigmatic image which allows itself to settle comfortably in a place of mystery and so does not display its meaning or narrative on its surface. The viewer is met by a depiction of a young woman, shrouded in darkness, but flooded with light as she slowly breathes in and reflects upon the butterflies alighting upon her shoulder. These butterflies are my more obvious allusion to classical Greek myth and the story of Psyche. My thoughts on the myth of Psyche and my hope to display that myth in a form intriguing to a contemporary viewership are the grounds upon which this painting was created. I hope it can, if nothing else, allow viewers a moment of self contemplation even if the allegory is not entirely unambiguous.
